EB0 bass

Postby elDave » Thu Mar 11, 2010 8:41 pm

I picked up a Japanese EB0 bass a few weeks ago. I've never really liked Gibson basses but I wanted to try a short scale. No name on the headstock, removed long ago. Just a "Made in Japan" neckplate and "Nichioan" pots. El Degas? Ibanez? Who knows.

It had a bad off white spray paint job, at some point someone stripped the neck. That eventually gave it a dull grey un-finish on the neck. The bridge saddle looked like it was fabbed in shop class and a couple tuners were bent. It did come with a hard shell case though.

I dismantled and stripped everything. I tried a mahogany stain I had at home and it looked like fresh rust. I got a "Bombay mahogany" finish and was much happier.

While doing the finish I stumbled across an original NOS bridge a guy in North Bay was selling on Ebay. I made a bridge saddle out of 3/8" brass tube stock.

the same guy had a set of "elephant ear" tuners for under $20 so I splurged on them too.

I had to bore the holes , they're a bit big but nice quality, I'm pretty pleased with them. There was one downside though......

Now the headstock is too wide for the HSC. Oh well, I have a spare gig bag so no problem.

I was tempted to put a Gibson or other logo on it but I think I'll just leave it as the mystery EB0. Maybe I'll add a thumbrest and cover if I stumble accross any. As far as short scale goes, meh. It's not as nice a player as my Eldegas P-Bass or Yamahas, but still a nice knock around bass.

P'S Anybody need a hardshell case for an EBO with narrow tuners ?

QUITE an improvement!

But when they called those "elephant ear" tuners, they weren't kidding.

An El D just popped up on the bay.

Like Charles's but different colour and condition. Missing the bridge cover and tuner "washers" (bushings  )
