j200 el degas copy

Post by el dougo »

Wow, I never knew a board like this ever existed. This is very cool.I stumbled across it while surfing for info on my el degas. My name is Doug,I live in white rock bc.I'm currently working in Kamloops bc. So I can't post any pics yet.I'm an avid collector of japanese guitars, but not as crazy as some of you on here.Honestly I mostly collect Yamakis, but I do have a mint condition sunburst j200 el degas .MIJ. It is all laminate construction and sounds ok. ( not anything like the real thing though )but it sure is purdy :D I replaced the goofy adjustable bridge by filling the slot with rosewood and routing a new slot for a bone saddle and replaced the plastic nut with a bone one. This really helped the sound alot. My friend who helped me with it is a very well known guitar tech around here and he couldn't believe how spot on all the dimesions are to a real j200.
I bought this guitar to take camping but it has never left the house since I owned it.
I'm thinking about selling it because I don't ever play it.The local vintage guitar store here said he would give me 200$ for it towards a trade on something in the store.Thats all I ever expected to get from it anyway.I think he wants the jumbo case more than the guitar really. I will try to post some pics here before I sell it.

The J200-copy is one of the only El Degas acoustic models I still lust after...
Hmm... Kamloops isn't that far of a drive from Calgary
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

I'm in no hurry to get rid of it yet. I drive back to the coast every weekend then back to kamloops.Got some holidays coming up and then there's those pesky olympics in town.So I can't see anything happening with it until at least the end of march.Eventually I'll post some pics and you can really get your lust on  Can always throw it on a greyhound to Calgary.I'd rather see it go to someone who appreciates it than hanging on a wall in a guitar store.

Okay, so I've had my guitar for years, am totally in love with it, got it for free, and only looked up what it is now. I sure didn't expect all this! After looking through this site and a lot of image googling I think it is a GB 29 J200 El Degas. Sooo as soon as you can post those pictures I'll have a better idea. I'll try to get some of mine on here too, it's in pretty nice shape :D Once I do, it would be cool if anyone could tell me whether it's a MIJ or MIK and an estimate of it's year and price that would be great.

You called?
Welcome el Dougo, nice to have another Canuck around. Seems like there are more ED's in Canada than elsewhere. And we'd love to see your J200!
I mostly collect Yamakis...
Right on! Not too many know about that brand, and they tend to be very high quality workmanship, on a par with (or even better in some cases) than the famous Matsumoku made instruments of the time. I'd love to see your collection. PM me with a link if you have a picture album I can look at.
I will try to post some pics here before I sell it.
Yes please!

Definitely start a new thread with some photos when you have some for us. :)

Oh man, that's as tasty as they come! What a classic! :D
I don't think I've ever seen this version in an El degas before; It's usually the "Elvis" model in natural finish that you see.
Just gorgeous!!!
