El Degas MT-18
I just purchased an El Degas MT-18. It is in beautiful condition with mounds of abalone and a GREAT sound. Does any one have any information as to wood/solid or otherwise.....specs about this wonderful guitar?
Re: El Degas MT-18
It'll be a Martin copy of some sort - can you post some photos?

Hi graysonsausages and welcome to the forum.
Yes, pictures please. We El Degas perverts love to look!
As Charles has suggested you likely have a Martin copy in your hands, and if it's as terrific as some others we've seen you have made a great purchase! Love to see it!

You can't see it but I'm mopping up the drool on my keyboard...WOW!
That is a spectacular example of just how high a quality El Degas instruments can be.
They can be bloody awful too, but when you get a good one, you get a good one! And as far as construction goes, yes it's all solid wood, no plywood going on there! The top is solid spruce and given the age of the guitar (mid to late 70's?) the back and sides are likely Jacaranda, a beautifully grained type of rosewood mainly from Brazil.
Beautiful workmanship! You made a great purchase, hang on to her!

You did well on that one - looks a lot like the one I have (though if I recall correctly, some dummy removed the sound hole label from the one I got so I cannot confirm whether it's the same model as yours - my basement is torn apart right now for renos so I cannot go check).

Thanks for the feedback gents. Best $40 (with hardshell case) I've EVER spent!
I stumbled on another one last nite - MT-4M. Can you advise the woods on this one? It appears to be mahogany on mahogany.

$40?!?!? You lucky bugger!
Why, oh why, can I never find these deals? I'm constantly looking too!
As for this one...kinda hard to tell from just one picture and no close up but the grain and colour does look like mahogany. Not necessarily a bad thing but it will not have the same projection and clarity as a spruce or maple top. I'm guessing it's a later made model, possibly Korean. I doubt that it's MIJ with a mahogany top.

I can't quite see the style of the logo on the headstock to try to tell where it was made... (of course the sound hole label will probably answer the question most definitely - see if you can get the seller to provide a shot of it??)
I really like the Mahogany look! That's an acoustic I could grow to love pretty darn quickly (if it plays nicely)

I have this exact guitar! My serial number ends in 0094 so pretty damn close. I got it when my brother passed away years ago and sat in my basement for 5 years. I took it out recently and started playing it. Put new strings on it and I love it.
Re: El Degas MT-18
I to have a mt-18
I live in NB Canada and bought it in 1977 . I sold my car and got this. It was 1200.00 marked down to 600.00 . The sound is up there with the rest of them and the dealer said it was a copy of a Martin. Hope this helps. Danny . See it on YouTube under thedantec
