Newbie pickup question
Newbie pickup question
Hey all
Great site you guys have here.
I have an El Degas LP Black Beauty copy, 3 gold humbuckers, and the bridge pickup has crapped out. Any ideas on getting it replaced? Is it a Dimarzio? My dad bought this for me when I was 12 years old, mid 70'ish, so I would love to get it sounding right once again.
Thanks.

Yes, pix please!
Replacement pickups are always a debatable item, and it depends on how "original" you need the guitar to be. As Frenchy says, let's have a look at he current one and perhaps we can figure out what it is. Depending on how handy you are, there is always the possibility of repairing it. Often it's simply a corroded wire that''s the problem, but it involves some dis-assembly and some soldering.
The good news is that there are lots of very good, and inexpensive replacements out there from people like GFS, Tonerider, etc.

Re: Newbie pickup question
Your local guitar tech might be able to fix if it's a simple solder problem like Barry posted.
Depending on the condition/look of the pickup and other hardware (any oxidation or wear) you might even decide to pick up a set of pickups and get all three replaced... probably not necessary, but there's that option.
I have seen a 3-pup Black Beauty copy before somewhere on the internet, but it's certainly not one you get to see everyday. Definitely want to see pictures of yours!

I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

Re: Newbie pickup question
I will post a few pics tomorrow as I just found out I can't access photobucket from work. The pickup has no markings on the back. The guitar sat in the case for many years and after playing a number of other mid range and better guitars for years I pulled this one out and was amazed at how good it felt and sounded. It does weigh a ton but I am 6' 8" and 295 lbs so it isn't that big a deal. Great ebony fret board and fantastic sustain. I put a SD invader in the bridge and it screams but I kinda of like the stock sound and look as it has a lot of sentimental value to me. I will bastardize the Squier Strat instead.
Pics to follow soon.
Thanks

Re: Newbie pickup question
I'd check out a company such as GFS and see if you can get a pickup to match. They have many gold covered HB's (http://www.guitarfetish.com/Humbucker-S ... _c_26.html), and you'll get a lot of choice when it comes to the sort of tone you want.

Here are a few pics. They were taken with my phone so sorry about the quality.

Re: Newbie pickup question
Here is a pic of the pickup. No markings on it. Just 2 wires.

Thanks in advance

Re: Newbie pickup question
Nice shinny guitar
I missed out on one like this in the past...Wish I would have grabbed it....
As for the Pups... not Maxon...Maxon have serial # on the bottom that at least tell you the year made... I would open the pup up to see if only a wire desoldered or go the GFS or other route...
Someone sent me this link for pups recently:
