Classical CL48

Post by codamedia »

I picked this guitar up about 12 years ago for $80.00, and it also included a hard shell case. I had to put a new set of machine heads on the guitar, but aside from that it was in perfect working condition. No serious cracks and the bridge, heal and bracing was solid.

From what I can tell, it is an MIJ guitar, likely from the 70's.

What I know for certain is that this guitar plays like a much more expensive guitar. I have NEVER picked up a classical guitar in a music store that feels or sounds this good. It is perfect for my needs.

What I find odd is that there appears to be two serial numbers on this guitar. Aside from the one on the label in the soundhole (4010042), there is also want stamped in the neck/heal inside the guitar (S 822115).

If anyone can explain this to me I would appreciate it.

My hunch is that the inside serial number may be the original manufacturer. I know these are white labelled guitars, but to find a 2nd serial number is odd - almost as if it was not intended to get the El Degas name on it at all. Or - is this the manufacturer model number?

ED is not the only MIJ brand to feature this apparent 2 serial number puzzle. The Vantage line of acoustic guitars made by Matsumoku in Japan in the early 80's shows a number on the paper label and another one stenciled on the inside similar to yours. No relation is apparent between them either.

It's anyone's guess what it means...could be a stock/inventory number or a finish reference of some kind.

Yeah, I don't think anyone will ever be able to explain the anomaly. Pretty interesting, though!
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)
