el Degas 12 String

Post by gergbee »

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what my old 12 string is worth. I know it's not much but I have been thinking of selling it and I have no idea where to start.

I know it's made in Korea Model MT5 and there's no serial number. I guess that it was made in the 80s and I imagine it was a fairly cheap model to begin with but I am not sure how cheap.

So if anyone has any ideas on what I should ask for it (if I do sell it) that would be very helpful. Or even if I got a bit more info on it, that would be great too.

Thanks,

Greg

That's a copy of a Martin (which one, I have no idea  , but the MT prefix denotes that its a copy of a Martin of some sort)

I see a fair amount of entry level MT- Martin copies from El Degas around the ol' interweb, and they tend to be listed at about $100-200.

Hope this helps.
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

Thanks for the info. I figured it wouldn't be worth very much but I thought I'd ask.

On a related note: If the MT was Martin then the SG copy I saw in a pawn shop a couple of months ago would have had a G-something model number? I toyed with picking it up but I was rushed that day and by the time I got back it was gone.

I've never seen a model number on any of their electrics, only their acoustics. We normally just refer to the electrics by what name-brand model they copied (they are easier to determine than the acoustic models being emulated, at least to an acoustic philistine like myself :P .

The El Degas brand did not use a reliable model or serial numbering system for the most part. At least their acoustics has some semblance of model nomenclature - GB for Gibson-copy, GL for Guild-copy, MT for Martin-copy, CL for Classical.

YMMV - it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Fortunately for buyers El Degas guitars tend to be priced pretty low (for the most part); unfortunately for sellers... El Degas guitars tend to be priced pretty low (for the most part).

Looks like she's in great shape, and I'm guessing it plays well?
