El Degas F175

Post by suky »

Hello, I am a new poster to this site. I picked up an El Degas F175 at a yard sale for $25.00 last year. Don't know anything about the brand and was wondering if anyone could tell me about my new find! :) It has a floating bridge which i find interesting. The serial number says 1973, is that the year it was born? Thanks in advance...

Nice guitar - I've seen an F170 and F185 before, so this is a new one!.

The "F" in the model number lends a clue in to what guitar this might be copying. The nomenclature for the acoustic models denotes what brand they were copying (i.e. MT### = Martin copy). F for... Fender copy maybe? Could be. Unfortunately I am a philistine when it comes to the acoustic world, so I cannot ID what guitar it is emulating off-hand.

Hard to say what the serial number is about - the brand never did use a serial numbering system in a way that would make it useful for us to now find out any further info on the guitar... could be the year made, or just a coincidence :?

Not sure if it's MIJ or MIK - that logo style was sometimes used in either case, and the fact that the sound hole label doesn't say "Made in Korea" doesn't mean that it wasn't; if I had to guess I might say Japan... but on another day I might muse about Korea... I just cannot be certain. :(

That's great that the floating bridge is in tact and (I hope) the truss rod is still working and keeping everything stable. Congrats on a great find. Enjoy it, sorry I cannot give you more info, but there really isn't much out there.
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

Hi suky, and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on an amazing score---$25???? Seriously!!

Any chance of some full body pictures, front and back? They might possibly help identify the style a bit more accurately. That, plus we'd just like to see her and add her to the growing portfolio of El Degas acoustics!
I'm a bit more optimistic than Charles, I think it's quite possible that "1973" is indeed the year of manufacture, and maybe based on a Fender model, but we need to get a look at the whole guitar to get a better overall feel for its style and vintage.

Today's a good day, so I venture a guess of a mid-70s MIJ model
