Hummingbird copy

Post by eldegasjunkie »

hi everyone. im glad i found this site, i love all your pics, i ve been trying to find some info about my lovly guitar i bought last winter..where i live is quite cold in the winter, so i decided to buy a guitar to keep myself occupied..i looked at buying a new guitar from a store, but to get a quality one, it was a lot more then i wanted to pay. so i started looking on kijijji. i found this guy that a yamaha for sale, so i went in to calgary to have a look.the fella said he was a guitar teacher and has been playing for years. he showed me the guitar and played it for me(i didnt know how to play a single chord!) it was fairly beat up and sounded awfull! so i was ready to leave when he said he would part with another guitar he had downstairs...he brought it out...and i was not impressed....he had painted a waterfall scene and a troll/wizard guy where the pik guard was..then sprayed textured paint over the entire face!! but when he played it, the sound was amazing! ten times better then the beat up yamaha..he told me it was a gibson "hummingbird" replica...the sound is what sold me....he was quite happy with what he had done and i hated the painting with a passion..( i didnt have the nerve to tell him,so we settled on 200 bucks( i think he wanted 250)and took it home and all winter learnt(and still learning) to play the thing, all my guitar playing buddies say the sound is amazing. and come over and play MY guitar instaed of theres! the action is awesome, it holds a tune forever. so eventually had to get rid of the paint, istarted with hand sanding...eventually goin to an orbital and about two weeks, i had the textured paint, felt marker, airbrush, oil based and white primer off, i was worried i would sand a hole rite through the thing, but patience and advice from friends helped out. i couldnt apply the laquer very well with a brush (streaks) so eventuall i just painted it and then sanded with 220 grit then 300 grit, so it has a non gloss finish, its not a proffessional job by any means, but i dont have to look at the troll/ dude wizard guy anymore, i love my el degas, i now own three guitars now acoustic/bass, electric and my eldegas, ill put some picks on the forum, thanks to everyone for all there infoand picks

Hi there, I split your post off into its own topic.

Really looking forward to seeing your handiwork on your El Degas.
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)
