White El Degas Les Paul Custom copy

Post by pappashank »

Ok, I must be an idiot because I'm having a hard time posting a picture of my guitar here. I would like to do this so maybe someone can give me some info on it. It is a white LP Custom very similar to Geoff's (edit: http://www.eldegas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1683 - Charles) except mine is not a bolt-on neck, it is a set-neck.
It also weighs a TON lol and has the brass nut. I bought it used around '84. I've seem many El Degas's over the years and but none anywhere near the quality of this one, which has always confused me. I now have real USA Gibson Les Pauls and SGs and although they sound better, the El Degas has a much better playing neck. It really has the same quality appearance a Gibson. It's now aged to that nice yellowish tint like a '70s Les Paul and looks great! I have EMG 95s in it right now but still have the original pickups. They have the number 181013 stamped on the back. I still gig out with it occasionally and guitar players are always blown away by it's looks, sound and feel and I've gotten many offers for it. This is the first electric guitar I ever bought so it is very special to me and I will never sell it. Sounds like you guys are the experts here so any info re the pickups, possible age of the guitar, what kind of wood, construction, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Man, that's beauty!
Can we see some more shots of the neck, etc? And it appears as though the pickups have been changed. Pity, they were likely DiMarzio's.

Thanks Barry!

I will get a few more pics asap. And, I do still have the original pickups. I'm going to re-install them to see what they sound like, I took them out almost 30 years ago and don't remember lol.

Niiiice. :D

I have that same model. MIJ, set neck copy of the Les Paul Custom. As far as I know, it did not have Dimarzios as the stock pickups (mine is stock as far as I know, with nickel-covered something-or-others).
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

pappashank, I am very sorry but when I was moving your posts from the other thread to this one I accidentally scrubbed your last two posts with photos!!! I have retrieved the IMG links from your Photobucket and am reposting them in this post on your behalf. Apologies! - Charles

Yes indeed!
The bolt-on versions are amazingly good but I expect the set necks would be just that much nicer, and of course, truer to the Les Paul spec.
Thanks for the pix of the original pickups Ken.

Looks like you're right Charles, no DiMarzio markings (although they still might be DM's in disguise  )
I'm curious to know what the DC resistance is on these. If they register in the double digits (11-14 KΩ) it would indicate Super Distortion territory. Somewhere in the 6-8 KΩ range would suggest something closer to PAF configuration.

Really gorgeous guitar!

Pretty sure these are PAF-alikes (is that a term? I'm making that a term  ). Not very hot.

One big thing as pappyshank noted - the set neck version is heavy. Really really heavy.

It's funny, I have a set of EMGs I was considering putting in my white LP... I figure with the weight of the guitar it seems like a great candidate for some screaming pickups.

Good point Barry. And by coincidence, I have those pickups sitting in front of me on my desk, and my trusty Fluke as well. I get about 7.5K on one and 7.8K on the other.
I think I'll put these back in soon.

Cheers and thx

EMG's?! Image
N-o-o-o-o-o-!! Run away!
I detest EMG's. (I hope you didn't install the active version) Worst thing you could do to a Les Paul. You could nail those things to a car fender and still get the same sound..i.e. rubbish. Get those "PAF's" back in there. With luck they have Alnico magnets which will give a warm vintage tone, and break up nicely when driven.

LOL, like I said, I put those EMGs in there about 25 years ago when I was young and foolish. The original PAFs(?) will be back in soon, I shall post pics!

Looks great Pappa...almost identical to mine in another thread. Mine is bolt-on and has the top hat knobs, PAF/SuperDistortion pups...very heavy as well...I just had mine set-up and now it plays like a dream... :D
