New SG

Hi!

I bought this SG "replica" tonight. It was posted in Montreal Kijiji for around 20 minutes when I spotted it.
Looks quite like a Gibson '61. Pickguard has not his scews positionned the exact way.

Made In Korea ( as written on back of headstock ), multi-ply construction, set neck, "Degas" in Logo is inlaid MOP, while "El" is printed.
Not at all in mint condition but still not abused for a product of the '80s .
Same pots and switch than my set neck ED LP (already posted here)

Very dark brownish wine transparent finish but no grain really showing thru. Like if a base coat was covering a not so nice wood I guess.

Had to resolder a wire to the switch and it seems that the PUs, pots and switch are working as they should by testing while tapping on PU's screws with a scewdriver.

Pictures show as I found it. Missing the tailpiece and bridge. Anybody has them to sell????

Sounds like you know all the basic info on this already... 80s, MIK

You'll probably be best served by Epiphone/import style tunomatic & tailpiece replacements (I would NOT recommend Gibson USA parts as they are sized differently and will not fit).

Good buy. I have a white one like that - watch the neck stability - not a lot of wood holding that neck joint together

Hey michel, nice score!
Even though she's MIK, she looks to be well made, even for a laminate. I'm impressed that the control cavity has aluminum foil shielding on the cover plate, and that the cavity appears to be painted also with shielding paint! That indicates a higher than average attention to detail and is reminiscent of the MIJ Matsumoku and Fuji Gen era manufacturing style. Very nice!
Good luck obtaining the missing hardware.

HI!

It is now completed by "borrowing" parts from a entry level SG type guitar from unidentified origin that I had for while.
Only had to lightly enlarge the bridge's holes. The rest fitted right in easily.
Will definitively need better tuners.
Plays and sounds good.

Hey man, good job!
I can't tell too well from the single picture, did you also do some work on the body finish and the fretboard? If not, I'd spend some time on that as well. A once or twice over with a good polishing compound and polish will do wonders.
On the recommendation of my local guitar tech, I've recently changed to Mequiars Ultimate Polishing Compound:

and the results are amazing! Especially if you use a foam rubber applicator. Follow that up with a good liquid wax and you won't recognize the old gal!
I got mine at Canadian tire but it's likely available at auto supply stores too, or even Walmart!
