Guitar straps and end pin jacks

Post by the52blues »

Anyone else have trouble getting your strap on the electric end pin jack on your acoustic/electric guitars? I have asked music stores and strap manufacturers if there is a strap that is made to fit these enlarged end pin jacks and the best answer I have gotten is shrugged shoulders and "Yeah it's hard to get them suckers on ain't it?"

Here is my solution.

I make my own adapters from a 4"X1" piece of leather (4-5oz or 2 mm) with a properly cut 7/16" hole and 3/4" slit which fits most enlarged end pin jacks. The other end uses a decorative, screw on concho to secure it to the end of the strap.

Here's what it looks like attached to my Taylor DDX

I'm thinking of making these and selling them for $10-12 (depending on cost) Do you think there is any interest in these? The strap companies don't seem to think it's a problem.

Those look really nice!
I think you could find a market.
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

Certainly an idea worth exploring but your marketing may have to be via the Internet.
Similar to a headstock strap so I think the strap companies may have missed the boat on this one and forgotten the other end of the guitar:

Have you done any serious research to see if this has already been done? If not you might want to slap a design patent of some sort on it; sooner rather than later.

You'll definitely want to get the word of mouth out via the internet - forums like Harmony Central might be a good place to start.

Yes, get some sort of patent on it if it has not been done before someone snipes the idea!

Before I made them I searched the internet for "end pin jack adapter" guitar adapter straps" etc. and found nothing so I started looking for materials and tools to make these. The original idea was to use a jean jacket stud but it fastens on permanently and the head was a little to big (.75) to go through the standard strap hole. Once I found the reusable screw-on conchos I decided to make a couple of test pieces to see if there was interest. I used an old guitar strap and cut the pieces out, punched the holes and added the conchos and took them in to Long & McQuade to see what they thought. Bill took two seconds to find several different versions on line. Why I could not find anything I don't know. Mine is still different than some of the ones on line but there are people making similar devices. My biggest problem is finding the right leather to use to make them. I don't want to buy a whole hide, skive it, cut it, dye it etc. just to make a few. I found a guy in Hamilton that might make them for me as opposed to me messing up my condo then I'll stick some on Kijiji and see what happens.
