identification

Post by volsav »

Hello,
I have an El Degas hollow body 6 string guitar body guitar. The identification label has been lost. I am asking for help in identifying this guitar. I purchased it used in San Francisco in the spring of 1974. I have attached seven pictures of the guitar.
Thank you,
Tim

Looks like you have an MT- model that someone's removed the soundhole label from. The MT- models are copies of Martin acoustics.
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

Very nice woods used in your guitar. That appears to be rosewood on the sides and back.

Oh yes, sorry I should have mentioned the woods - like many MT- models do, this one features a spruce top, rosewood on the sides & back, and a mahogany neck.

If you look really closely at the sound hole photo of the guitar, you see an "S" on the bottom.

In that same photo, look really closely at the soundhole, and the wood used. Look at the grain of the wood from top to bottom (not left to right, top to bottom which is very thin). You will notice the grain passes all the way through or at least - appears to.

This is a solid top!

Yup! The majority of ED MIJ instruments are! That's what makes 'em great.

Even more "budget" instruments from that era had access to wood that's no longer available for guitar production. I love 70's MIJ El Degas acoustics for that reason!
