Post by bublives »

Grettings all,

Just looking for a little more info about a El Degas MT 18 that I own. Im actually looking to sell it and was wondering if anyone knows what it may be worth. I have posted the link to the add on the website I am advertising it at. Please let me know what you think.

Looks like you have your info correct in the ad; the MT- models are copies of Martin acoustics and yours is a MIJ model.

MT- models seem to usually list on the internet anywhere from $100-500 depending on the condition of the instrument, country of manufacture, and the level of motivation of the buyer. Many models sell for $150-250, but some may sell for more (particularly some of the more 'deluxe' 70's Japanese models with better fit & finish, which may sell for $200-500).
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

Looks like a very nice model you have there, but I'd think twice before trading it for a "modern" Ovation! You'd need to be more specific there.
The cheaper ones are made in Korea and worse, are just that--poorly made. I'd stay right away from the new stuff, especially the Celebrity models.

I have 2 American made (Kaman) Ovations, an '83 Collector's edition and a '91 Elite. They're both well built instruments, beautiful to look at, and rugged performers. Unfortunately, they're lousy acoustically but good plugged into a PA for stage use. Not really a guitar to showcase your soloing, more rhythm oriented.

I just have to say - my MIJ El Degas MT-something (previous owner tore off the sound hole label :x ) has the most full, rich acoustic sound of all my acoustics. I once had it listed for sale; I had a lovely afternoon playing all my acoustics back-to-back, and promptly removed the sale listing.

If you have a really good Martin copy... you just might want to consider holding onto it! Remember that a very good guitar made in the 70s sometimes has materials (certain woods) that the top-shelf modern guitars don't, simply because the supply is gone/protected! My 2 cents.

(edit) With that said...
Of course, don't let me dissuade you if you really want to sell the guitar towards what you truly desire. I just want to put in perspective the fact that you might be ridding yourself of a really great playing and sounding guitar. :)
