El Degas GB 84, value?

Post by kidkodak2116 »

Hi ! First I'd like to apologize for my bad english, I know I suck!

My grand-mother got her old guitar out of her closet and started to play again. She brought it to a repair shop for a check-up and the guy there told her that her guitar was worth 800$-1000$ and that the damages on the guitar (wich are minors) could cost her 300$.

I'm wondering if he's right or ifmy grandma just went to the wrong store where dishonnest jerks takes advantage of old ladies.

I've made some research on the internet but I found nothing about the value of the guitar now. I found out it was the copy of the Gibson J-200 (wich is sold between 2400$ and 3000$ on ebay).
My grand-mother purchased it around 1972 and remembers paying it 300$ although I found a guy on the internet who payed 200$ for a similar guitar in 1978.

Could someone help me make my grandma happy? ;)

El Degas
Modelo GB 84
Serie no 2
Bought around 1972, maybe 1973

Thanks !

I've never seen a J-200 copy go for as much as $800-1000, but I suppose a motivated buyer could somehow pay that much.

Pricing on these old El Degas acoustics is very subjective, but in my opinion, it's far more likely that it would be in the $200-400 range, but that's for a model in fair condition. Since I'm not pricy on the amount and severity of repairs needed, I'm not sure how that might affect the value.

You should just sell it to the guy at the music store for $1000  8)
I started ElDegas.com many years ago to help celebrate and inform about El Degas instruments. It all started with a used Ric 4000 bass copy I bought in circa 2000.

El Degas stable as of 03/2022: 42  (13 bass, 26 electric, 3 acoustic)

That's what I'm gonna do, thanks for the advice! :P

Seriously, your answer confirmed what I was thinking, the guy at the repair shop is maybe not really honnest.

Thanks a lot !!!!

Honesty may or may not be in question.

I have two theories:
a: honest - sees a copy of a Gibson acoustic that Gibson has a msrp of $4925 (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Acousti ... ndard.aspx) and simply assumes someone would pay about a grand for it
b: dishonest - wants to sell your grandmother on $300 worth of repairs to an instrument worth roughly as much; see opportunity to do so by giving an inflated estimate of its value

In any case, good luck with it. I'd love to see some photos, and the J-200 copy is one of the very few acoustics I still GAS for (I have two El Degas acoustics already and that's probably enough for me since I play mainly electrics)
