My Les Paul Standard

Post by engsr »

First off, thanks Charles for this site. Hopefully I can get some information about my guitar since I can't really find much about anything El Degas on the internet, thus far. Actually, I just realized that mine is a Standard after seeing your FS post.

So the (apparently very LONG) story goes like this:

I'm a drummer and I've been playing since 92. I've played in a few bands with close friends and I would sometimes pick up the guitar at jams and sort of noodle around with it. I had no clue what to do except the basic power chords circa Nirvana. Never put any real effort into it since I concentrated mainly on the drums.

I picked up a bass a few years later - this really odd thing, looked like an Explorer or sorts but had no head. I don't have any pictures of it, unfortunately (or fortunately). I had that for a few months, never really got in to it. Eventually sold it for what I paid and that was that.

Kept with the drums, played with some really great musicians in Toronto, did a lot of gigs, some CDs, etc.

Fast forward to about 5 years ago. My drum playing sort of slowed down for various reasons - school, work, etc. I was gigging with a band but I lost interest, left that band, and eventually my playing pretty much stopped. I think I would touch my drums no more than once every two weeks, if that.

But I needed something musical to do, and I started longing for a guitar. However, since I knew absolutely nothing about them, I never put a lot of interest in it. At my previous job, I met a few guys there that were also musicians, and eventually we started to jam on a regular basis.

I told one of the guys that I was sort of looking at getting a guitar and he told me a few things to look for. He said you have to consider what style of music you want to play and get a guitar that would be suitable for it. Since I'm a hard rock/punk person, he said a good guitar would be a Les Paul or a Telecaster. I don't really like the look of a Tele, so I opted for looking at a LP. The guy said that he would look for one since he just found another co-worker a MANN Les Paul for $150.

So one day in July 07, he sent me a link from Craigslist for an El Degas Les Paul for $250. He told me not to waste any time and email this person right away. So I did and a few replies later I get that an offer of $350 was thrown out for the guitar, and I was asked if I would be willing to match that. I said I was willing to pay the $250 as long as everything checked out, and that I wasn't interested in a bidding war, but you were free to sell it to whoever. As luck would have it, the person emailed me back and said that they would let me take a look at the guitar first, since they realized that I wasn't out to make any money off this.

I meet up with this person's mother, a really sweet older Italian lady. She told me how she used to be an opera singer back home and that when she came to Canada, she wanted her children to be involved in music somehow. So she bought this guitar for her daughter but her daughter never really picked it up - rather, she opted for an acoustic. So the LP basically sat in its case in their basement or closest for who knows how long - my guess is at least 20 years or so.

When I saw this guitar, I was instantly sold on it. After checking it out, the only thing I noticed that was somewhat major, was the nut on the jack was missing, so the jack would fall inside the guitar. Also, the amp that came with the guitar, didn't work - I found out later, it was the patch cord. I managed to get the guitar with a shaped hardcase and amp for $210.

Honestly, this thing is perfect - no scratches, no dings, completely minty fresh. I'm actually (at times) reluctant to play it because I don't want to mess it up - ie. drop it, put any dings in the body, etc. But since I did buy it with the intent of learning, I haven't really put it down since the day I got it.

I also have a Yamaha F-160 acoustic, which I found on Craigslist. I'm currently looking for a better amp (since the one that came with the guitar sucks, haha). Not really sure what to get since there are so many options out there. Also hinting at another guitar but that would depend on what type of deal I can find.

Anyway, here are a few pictures of the LP:

You'll notice in the first pictures the black volume and tone knobs. Well, one of my co-workers pointed out that those weren't the guitar's knobs, and I realized that the original owners swapped the knobs from the amp since one of the guitar knobs was missing, haha. So I ordered a set from eBay and it's all "original" now.

So there's the story of this Les Paul. I'm really lucky that I was able to pick this thing up all things considered. I do know that I have learned a lot with it and I don't plan on slowing down at this point. Thanks for letting me share.

She's a beauty!

Looks like yours is one of the MIJ (Made in Japan) models with Dimarzio pickups and (I believe) a phase in/out mini-toggle switch. My understanding is that this was a stock configuration offered in some of their guitars. And that Gold-top.... oh my, yes. :D Just get some gold bell knobs on there...

LOVE that configuration, especially if its a Super Distortion in the bridge position and a PAF in the neck position (you will be able to tell by the poles of the pickups - the Super Dist has hex-shaped holes in the poles and the PAF has one row solid and one row screw-ended poles). It appears from your first photo that this is the case. I have a tobacco-burst LP with that same configuration and it is awesome.

Enjoy it!

By the way, I started about the same way as you - drummer for several years, tried bass, then picked up guitar.

For a guy who figured he'd never go the guitar route, it sure didn't turn out that way (though drums & bass are really my strongest instruments)

Yep, the pick-ups are exactly as you described. At first I didn't notice a difference, but it's good to know what the actual difference is now. As for the little toggle switch, I was told it was to switch to change the humbucker to act as a single coil ... unless the phase change does the same thing. To be honest, I haven't noticed a big difference between the two yet.

Looking at your collection, I had no idea that they copied all of those designs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that the El Degas's were built in the same factory as the Ibanez's at one point in the 70s. So would that mean Ibanez copied all those designs or were most of the guitars built out of the same factory, regardless of the brand? The latter seems too far-fetched, ha.

Oh, and I hope that I don't start a collection of these things. Not that there's anything wrong with it. :P

The mini-toggle may be a coil-split rather than for putting the pups in/out of phase. I'm not competent enough in electronics to know either way. I always thought it would be a coil-split but some people have told me they thought it was a phase switch. Who knows? I don't!

El Degas came in many different flavours - and there are MIJ (made in Japan) and MIK (made in Korea) models in my possession. They were made in many different factories (but know knows which one(s)... that's the sixty-four dollar question).

The Ibanez connection to El Degas is, in my opinion, mostly hearsay. Or actually, a half-truth that's been molded to suit a purpose (see the end of this paragraph). While some El Degas guitars were most likely built in the same factory as Ibanez at some point in the history, El Degas guitars were built by many factories in Japan (and later in Korea) for B&J of New York (I liken it to the sort of made-to-order guitar production you now see for Agile guitars for Rondo; Xaviere guitars for GFS; and ,hell, even Epiphone's Chinese guitar plant for Gibson!). Anyone claiming that these ARE Ibanez guitars are probably claiming that in an eBay auction; so draw your own conclusions there (hint: it's about making more of something that rhymes with "bunny").

And as far as I see it, it's only a collection if you don't play them  although I'm often so busy that this IS the case  but I sure love to play them all.

engsr your guitar look more like a goldtop custom :P

anyway she is awesome but,
i have one of the most beautiful el degas lp, the white custom like we can see in the picture of charles. im so jealous of your collection charles!!

seriously the most beautiful lp i seen was on ebay, i lost the bid :(
im sure you would buy that el degas, she was a natural custom with the same headstock like my guitar, but with 3 pickups gold. i like it more than a real gibson that can cost more than 10 times the price.

Image

what i search is a real made in japan el degas SG as good as my LP custom.

I've always thought 3 pickups was a bit of overkill, but that's a nice guitar all the same!

I take it that's the Gibson equivalent on the right hand side of the photo - I think the top looks nicer on the El Degas

...this picture was to compare the el degas with a gibson, if you want more pictures to compare i have pictures of everything, pickups, electronics, neck, headstock...

my collection is different, i have 7 asian SG and different basses and guitars from different brands like ibanez, spector...

i mod the electronic of all my guitars, but the LP with a dimarzio dp101 is too hot, i just change the neck pickup who look bad, for an epiphone lp pickup that look more paf.

the first time i tried an el degas it was a black lespaul, in 1991, a good experience if you compare to the guitar i had in 1991, a poor Raven SG in plywood. but i love the fretboard of that Raven. i hope ill find a kay or eldegas with the same fretboard.

here its a picture of my first Raven(with 57classic+ and a 490R), my nakamura that i changed everything except the body :P and my beautiful el degas white.

thank you very much for that site about el degas guitars!

Hey engsr...that is one sweet axe! I'm green with envy.

The closest I have to an LP is a 2007 Epiphone Les Paul Studio (which by the way is fantastic even if it is made in China).

I agree with Charles' comment about the 3 pickups being overkill; not only because it's too many, but mainly because I've come to the conclusion that I cannot play a 3 pickup guitar since my right hand position falls exactly where the middle PU is and I'm constantly hitting it with the pick!

So...no Strats (or 3-PU LP's) for me (sigh)

Woah, haven't been back here in a long time.

Hey acdc126:

I think I remember that ebay guitar you speak of. Was it located in Quebec?

By the way, I like the white LP, too. I saw one for sale in Oshawa a little while back, but I'm trying hard not to start a collection of these things. :P
